Semiconductor IP revenues drive EDA sector forward

Revenues for EDA products and services grew by 7.5% in Q1 2015 to $1.877billion, compared to $1.746bn in Q1 2014. And, according to the EDA Consortium, the moving average – which compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters – increased by 8%.

"The EDA Industry continues to show solid revenue growth in the first quarter, led by semiconductor IP," said Wally Rhines, pictured, EDAC board and chairman and CEO of Mentor Graphics. "All categories showed revenue increases, except CAE. Geographically, the Americas and Asia-Pacific reported double digit growth."

Revenues from semiconductor intellectual property saw a 19.3% boost to $618.1m, with the four quarters moving average increasing by 24.3%. CAE – the largest EDA sector – saw revenues decline by 0.8% to $633.7million in Q1 2015. However, ic physical design and verification revenue grew by 8.3% to $359.3m, while sales of PCB and MCM products generated $161.5m, 1.1% more than Q1 2014.

The Americas remains the largest consumer of EDA, with purchases of $853m, 12.2% more than Q1 2014. Asia/Pacific sales were said to be 12% higher, while EMEA sales dropped by 6.2% and sales in Japan decreased by 0.2%.
