MPUs targeted at industrial IoT and wearable applications

A new series of ARM Cortex-A5 based microprocessors has been launched by Atmel, which says the devices deliver the lowest power consumption of all MPUs in its class. Called the SAMA5D2 series, the parts are said to consume less than 200µA in retention mode with context preserved and to wake up in 30µs.

Also featuring an ARM NEON engine, the SAMA5D2 series delivers runs at up to 500MHz. Its memory system includes a configurable 16 or 32bit DDR interface controller, along with a 16bit external bus interface and a QSPI flash interface. There is 128kbyte of SRAM on board, plus a 128kbyte L2 cache which can be configured as an SRAM extension.

Describing the news family as ‘a great migration path’ for designers using ARM926 based MPUs, benefits include a smaller footprint and Atmel’s SleepWalking technology.

The SAMA5D2 is well positioned for these demanding requirements, delivering the world’s lowest power MPU, along with low system cost and PCI level security.”
