IR Adds Optimized Single-Phase 5A and 12A Synchronous Buck Reference Designs to POWIR+ Family

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - International Rectifier, IR® (NYSE: IRF), a world leader in power management technology, today introduced two new POWIR+™ chipset reference designs, the IRPP3624-05A and IRPP3624-12A. Simplifying and accelerating circuit design, the new reference designs target single-phase synchronous buck converter applications in computing and high-end consumer applications.

The new POWIR+ chipsets, featuring IR’s IR3624MPBF PWM control IC and companion HEXFET® MOSFETs, are supported by these new reference designs and IR’s enhanced design services available at http://powirplus.irf.com/, where the standard designs may be modified to create custom circuits, for faster time-to-market.

“The new reference designs provide an extremely useful and simple way of designing on-board embedded single-phase synchronous buck converters of up to 5A or 12A. The on-line design tool configures the reference designs to meet specific requirements for a variety of input and output voltages, assuring a reliable and dependable reference design,” said Rami Hamze, senior marketing manager for IR’s DC-DC Standard Computing Products.

Technical Highlights

The IRPP3624-05A, optimized for low-current applications up to 5A, achieves 88.5% efficiency with 12V input and 3.3V output. The IRPP3624-12A, targeting medium-current applications up to 12A, achieves 84% efficiency with 12V input and 1.8V output at maximum load. Both reference designs utilize the IR3624MPBF PWM Control IC that includes features such as pre-bias start-up, programmable over-current protection, and 0.6V precision internal reference voltage.

The IRPP3624-05A uses a dual SO-8 MOSFET, the IRF8910PBF, to reduce size and component count. The IRF7823PBF and IRF7832ZPBF SO-8 MOSFETs utilized in the IRPP3624-12A allow higher current due to improved thermal and electrical efficiency.

Each of these fully-tested and characterized POWIR+ reference designs is available with a full suite of online simulation tools. Simulation capabilities include small- and large-signal analysis, switching waveforms, and performance analysis for all components.

Availability and Pricing

The new series of POWIR+ chipset reference designs is available immediately. Customized reference designs are available 1-2 weeks ARO, ordered through the POWIR+ chipset online design tool. Pricing for the standard IRPP3624-05A and IRPP3624-12A is US$150 each per unit. The devices are RoHS compliant and prices are subject to change.
