11:5516-bit USB microcontroller family
Microchip announces the 12-member PIC24FJ256GB1 microcontroller (MCU) family, which 100 nA standby current, memory up to 256 KB Flash and 16 KB RAM. The 16-bit family integrates USB 2.0 device, embedded-host, dual-role and On-the-Go (OTG) functionality. Microchip also provides software support, via free USB class drivers and applications. Applications such as reading and writing to Flash drives, interfacing to wireless networks, and system updates are all enabled through this complete, cost-effective USB microcontroller family.

In addition, the integrated Charge Time Measurement Unit (CTMU) peripheral—along with the royalty-free mTouch Sensing Solution software development kit—enables designers to add a capacitive-touch user interface without any external components. Combining this with Microchip’s free QVGA Graphics Software Library, engineers have access to a USB-enabled user interface solution. The devices offer up to four UARTs, three SPI ports and three I2C™ ports to expand control capabilities and also feature the “Peripheral Pin Select” pin-mapping function, which provides advanced I/O flexibility by enabling designers to map digital peripherals to different pins.

To allow design re-use, the PIC24FJ256GB1 family maintains pin, peripheral and software compatibility with Microchip’s 32-bit USB microcontroller family. Microchip’s complete portfolio of 8-, 16- and 32-bit devices is supported by a single Integrated Development Environment—the free MPLAB IDE. All PIC24F family members are supported by Microchip’s range of world-class development tools, including the MPLAB IDE, the MPLAB C30 C compiler, and the MPLAB REAL ICE emulation system. Existing owners of the Explorer 16 development board can purchase a USB OTG PIC24F plug-in module and a USB PICtail Plus Daughter Board.

The MPLAB Starter Kit for PIC24F comes complete with everything that developers need to get started, including the USB-powered MCU board, the MPLAB IDE and MPLAB C30 C complier, documentation, sample projects with tutorials, schematics, and 16-bit compatible peripheral libraries. Microchip’s free USB Host Stack, Device Stack, USB OTG Stack, Class Drivers (HID, MSD, CDC, Custom), and File Management software are available. The PIC24FJ256GB1 family is offered in 64-, 80-, or 100-pin TQFP package options, and all are available now for general sampling with volume production expected in May 2008.

11:51870-nm infrared emitter with viewing angle of ±38°
Vishay broadens its optoelectronics portfolio with the introduction of a wide-viewing-angle infrared emitter in a leaded package. With its uniquely designed lens, the TSFF5510 has a viewing angle of ±38°, which enables better performance than standard 5-mm emitters. The combination of a wide viewing angle, power output up to 1A, and high speed makes the TSFF5510 infrared emitter dedicated for infrared audio and video data transmission in free-air data transmission applications with high modulation frequencies or high data transmission rates, such as infrared toll collection and wireless audio transmission systems. With a forward voltage of 1.45V at 100mA and 2.15V at 1A, the TSFF5510 emitter provides the basis for very uniform operation performance, especially in a series circuit layout.

The device features switching times of 15ns, meeting the requirements for high-modulation operation of 23MHz, and supporting data transmission rates of up to 16Mbit/sec. Suitable for high-pulse-current operation, the TSFF5510 offers a peak wavelength of 870nm, 55-mW optical power at 100mA, and radiant intensity of 32mW/sr at 100mA. The device offers a compact leaded package with a lens radius of 2.35mm, a lens height of 3.8mm, a lens width of 4.8mm, epoxy bottom plane diameter of 5.9mm, and a lead distance of 2.54mm. The emitter is a lead (Pb)-free component in accordance with WEEE 2002/96/EC and RoHS 2002/95/EC.

11:50Multi-output regulator
STMicroelectronics has combined all supply-voltage and reference sources for a multimedia chipset and DDR2/3 memory into a single device by introducing the PM6641 multi-output regulator. The regulator, housed in a 7 x 7mm QFN-48 package, is integrating three programmable switching regulators, a 2A-rated linear low dropout (LDO) and a low-noise reference, and also meets the latest industry specifications for Ultra-Mobile PCs (UMPC). The three outputs are independently adjustable from 0.8V to 2.5V, enabling space savings in a variety of applications, including notebook and sub-notebook PCs, portable gaming terminals, set-top boxes, HDTVs and Personal Video Recorders (PVR).

By satisfying power requirements for Double Data Rate 3 (DDR3) memory, the PM6641 will address products using the latest high-speed memory standard. The programmable switching frequency from 500kHz to 1MHz allows the use of small inductors, and the device is also optimized for multilayer ceramic capacitors at the output. In addition, power-saving operation at light loads extends battery life and allows designers to reduce stand-by power consumption. Protection features include thermal protection, separate power-good signals, latched over-voltage and under-voltage protection, and active soft-end for all outputs. With programmable current-limit and soft-start for all outputs also included, these embedded features ease design-in to multiple products using the reference design provided.

The PM6641 is in mass production now, priced at $3 in quantities of 1000 units.
