Nuvoton Technology is sampling the KA85010UA, a 26-cell battery monitoring IC that integrates electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The device enables in-system battery degradation diagnosis, state-of-health (SOH) estimation, lifetime prediction and early detection of abnormal cell conditions without requiring external laboratory equipment.

Nuvoton KA85010UA 26-cell battery monitoring IC with built-in EIS
Key Characteristics
- Cell support: up to 26 cells
- Core feature: integrated electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)
- Measurement method: inductor-based EIS (uses two FETs + inductor)
- Thermal advantage: reduces PCB temperature rise by approximately 93% compared with conventional resistor-based EIS methods
- Supports battery degradation diagnosis and SOH estimation
- Enables lifetime prediction and early detection of abnormalities
- Measurements possible during battery operation, charging and rest
- High correlation with dedicated EIS equipment and IEC 62620 AC internal-resistance method
- Validated in joint research with AIST Group (results published in IEEE paper)
The inductor-based approach circulates energy stored in an inductor to generate the alternating measurement current, avoiding the significant heat generated when high currents are passed through a resistor. Evaluation examples include a 72 V pack with 1.5 A superimposed current and a 60 V pack with 0.7 A.
Target Applications
- Automotive battery packs
- Energy storage systems (ESS)
- Battery management systems requiring advanced cell health diagnostics
By embedding EIS capability directly into the monitoring IC, the KA85010UA allows continuous, in-system assessment of cell health without the need for specialized external instruments.
