Microchip Technology has launched the SAM9X75D5M System-in-Package (SiP), a hybrid device that combines the processing power of a microprocessor (MPU) with the familiar development environment of a microcontroller (MCU). This AEC-Q100 Grade 2 qualified solution is specifically designed for sophisticated Human-Machine Interface (HMI) applications in automotive and e-mobility markets.

Key Features and Architecture
The SAM9X75D5M integrates an Arm926EJ-S core running at 800 MHz with tightly coupled memory (TCM) and a five-stage pipeline for deterministic real-time performance. It includes hardware support for direct Java bytecode execution for legacy compatibility.
Three pin-compatible variants offer integrated SDRAM:
- 512 Mbit DDR2
- 1 Gbit DDR3L
- 2 Gbit DDR3L
This SiP approach significantly simplifies PCB design, reduces board footprint, and lowers the overall bill of materials (BOM).

Advanced HMI Capabilities
The device features a built-in 24-bit LCD controller supporting displays up to 1024 × 768 (XGA) resolution and screen sizes up to 10 inches. Flexible display interfaces include MIPI DSI, LVDS, and 24-bit RGB.
Rich connectivity options include:
- 10/100/1G Ethernet with TSN support
- High-speed USB, CAN, multiple SPI
- Up to 13 FLEXCOM serial interfaces
- Capacitive and resistive touch controller support
Robust hardware security features such as SHA, AES, and TDES are also integrated.
Target Applications
The SAM9X75D5M is ideal for:
- Digital cockpit clusters and smart instrument clusters
- HVAC control panels
- Electric vehicle (EV) chargers
- Industrial HMI and e-mobility applications
Developers can use the familiar MPLAB X IDE and MPLAB Harmony framework, with support for FreeRTOS, Eclipse ThreadX, and bare-metal development.
The SAM9X75D5M (512 Mbit variant) is available now, with 1 Gbit and 2 Gbit versions in sampling. Pricing starts at $9.12 (5,000-unit quantity).
