Carlo Gavazzi DRC61: Smarter Isolation Monitoring for EV Fast Chargers

Carlo Gavazzi has introduced the DRC61 insulation monitoring device designed for unearthed (IT) high-voltage DC systems in Mode 4 DC fast-charging stations. The device continuously monitors insulation resistance between the DC lines and protective earth, enabling early detection of insulation degradation and improving both safety and charger availability.

Key Specifications and Features

  • Operating voltage: up to 1000 V DC (permanently admissible up to 1100 V DC)
  • No external voltage adapters required — single-module architecture
  • System leakage capacitance support: up to 25 µF
  • CHAdeMO mode: supports 1.6 µF per conductor
  • Factory default thresholds: 500 kΩ (pre-alarm) and 100 kΩ (alarm)
  • Continuous monitoring of both positive and negative DC lines
  • RS485 interface with Modbus RTU for remote monitoring and configuration
  • Two configurable SPST relay outputs (warning + alarm)
  • Compatible with CCS and CHAdeMO charging standards
  • DIN-rail mounting, compact industrial design
  • Local and remote test/reset functions + LED status indicators
  • Additional monitoring of undervoltage and overvoltage conditions
  • Fail-safe design (outputs de-energised on critical failure or power loss)
  • UL 2231-1 and UL 2231-2 listed

By detecting insulation resistance drop early, the DRC61 allows operators to perform preventive maintenance instead of reacting only after a fault occurs. This reduces downtime and increases the reliability of high-power EV charging stations.

Target Applications

  • Mode 4 DC fast-charging stations
  • Battery energy storage systems (BESS)
  • DC microgrids
  • Other high-voltage unearthed DC installations

The DRC61 simplifies system design by eliminating external adapters, reduces component count, and helps OEMs optimise space and cost in modern high-power charging infrastructure.
